The Great Sahara

DOUZ- MATMATA - 1 DAY

This excursion takes you to the desert and sand dunes of the Grand Sahara and allows you to visit Matmata, a must see.

With an early departure from Djerba (around 6am), you will go to the village of Matmata Nouvelle via the ferry at Ajim. You will be cross plains of olive groves and pass the mountains of Daha.  At Matmata Nouvelle you will have a coffee/tea break.  This new town was developed by the government to avoid the spoiling the original setting of the Old Mamata.

After a tea break we gradually leave the mountains behind, crossing nearly 80km of desert plains.  As we approach Douz, the presence of the Grand Sahara will be noticed by the increasingly larger sand dunes. At Zaafrane, a village bordering Douz, you will find the highest dunes of fine sand.  A camel ride is optional after which a visit to the local souks will add to the variety of this tour. Lunch will be served at a hotel where a swim will be hard to resist.

Towards 15h00 we make our way to Tamazret, a Berber village nested in the tops of the mountain that is ideal for spectacular photos and video.
A few kilometers further you will reach Matmata, known for its cave dwellings – (underground houses in half-moon shapes).  This is also the site where some scenes from Star Wars were shot. Then finally back to Djerba via the ferry at Ajim
